STUCO beautification project underway

Following a project begun last year, Junior High Student Council  is continuing a campus beautification project.  It consists of planting seasonal plants around the school’s historical Bell Tower. The tower is a brick structure that was constructed in 1998 with names engraved  on individual  bricks of alumnae, Alex citizens, and individual names of family members who graduated from Alex High School.  The tower is topped with the old school bell that called Alex students to class for some 50 years. It was widely reported that the bell could be heard across the river for mile

STUCO plants mums for fall color, pansies in the winter and tulips in the springtime.  Working on getting the planter ready and replanted with mums for this year were Holly Anderson and Tessa Langford, co-presidents for STUCO with some assistance their moms, Carrie Anderson and Marla Langford and  from “Landscape specialist” Rose Barrington

STUCO and Otey family assume flag duties

When long-time Alex Cemetary Sextion Jerry Williams passed away in Spring 2009, the Alex Student Council (STUCO) stepped up and volunteered to assume one of his duties. Because community service is a major component of STUCO's activities, the organization is now responsible for making certain that flags are displayed in downtown Alex on all national and state holidays and during other appropriate celebrations. The Alex FFA is making the additional flag poles needed.

STUCO has for a number of years sponsored school assemblies including The Freedom Week Assembly, which teaches the importance of the US Constitution and the special provisions that make this country’s democracy work; the Veterans’ Day Assembly; Statehood Day Assembly; Martin Luther King Assembly; and many other holiday assemblies.<

STUCO also sponsors an Alex Town Hall Meeting during which school board candidates are introduced and then debate issues to let Alex citizens know what each candidate believes, stands for and hope to contribute to the school system.

STUCO is involved in keeping the Alex School campus "green" and is responsible for the planting, weeding and upkeep of the flower bed around the Bell Tower. At any season of the year, plants or flowers brighten up the landscape. STUCO also hosts a Pumpkin Decorating Contest each fall at the Alex carnival for students of all grades and adults as well. Each year following the school sponsored Thanksgiving Dinner for Senior Citizens, STUCO holds Bingo Contests.

As Cemetary Sexton, Jerry Williams was responsible for displaying flags in the Alex cemetary during holidays and placing small American Flags on the graves of individual veterans on appropriate occasions. At Williams' passing, this duty has been assumed by the children and grandchildren of the Larry Otey Family.

Through STUCO activities, all Alex students are learning proper flag etiquette, the true meaning of patriotism, the importance of volunteerism and love of country.
