History
From the Chickasha Express Star, August 14, 2009, Chuck Larsen, writer:
Lady Longhorns focus on fundamentals in ‘09 New Lady Longhorn fastpitch coach Bill Delaplain has his players getting back to basics as they prepare for the upcoming season.
“My emphasis is fundamentals,” the first-year coach said before Wednesday’s practice. “I also want to ensure every player is at least familiar with every position on the field. That’s critical in a small school, especially with the numbers that I have, that people be interchangeable. I’m really focused on making them as interchangeable as I
This will be a small team number-wise and a young team, with just three seniors – Mattie Hiten, Summer Fagan and Micha Witcher. Juniors Morgan Ledford, Courtney Dean and Crystal Neece, sophomores Paige Dunn, [Bethani] Woods, [Courtney Alcorn and Kristin Williams] and freshmen [Phaedra] Moore and Hailey Terry round out the ten-girl roster.
Right now, positions on the field are still up for grabs but the coach has found his starting pitcher.
“Our starting pitcher will be [Bethani] Woods,” he said. “She can bring some power but seems to be a little more of a finesse pitcher. She does throw hard and she tries to work the corners “We’ve got three or four more girls working on pitching,” he added, with a chuckle, “and I’m hoping they come along pretty quick so we don’t wear Bethan It’s also been back to fundamentals with the bats. “We’ve changed some batting fundamentals and it’s taking some time to get adjusted but we have four or five that can be ready to put some heat on the ball,” the coach sa “Summer and Courtney are hitting with power right now. All of them are making improvement and a lot of them are making good contact.”< With a lot on the table, Delaplain is cautiously optimistic about the season.
“We’ve got some athletes and we have some potential," he said. "I think that by mid-season we can be pretty competitive with most of our district. I’m hoping to see more success than they’ve had in the past few years This is Delaplain’s first year to coach at a public school. He’s from Wynnewood, where he worked for DHS. He has coached privately and has done a lot of umpiring, which gives him a different perspective on the game.< “I’ve had a lot of experience around softball,” he said. “I’ve seen a lot of teams go a long way and I’ve learned what works and what do Assisting Delaplain will be Carrie Anderson.
