FFA: Ready, Aim, Fire!
11-09-09: Alex FFA is aiming high with their latest educational and competitive event. FFA members, younger students and adults alike are involved in an educational gun safety and sporting clays program. This free program is geared toward developing responsible gun owners and improving shooting accuracy. The programs are scheduled for Sunday afternoons at 2 pm to the east of the new High School baseball field. Bring your own shotgun; clays are provided. Younger members may need adult assistance but are also encouraged to attend.
Funding for the program came from a grant written by Mr. Tolson and funded by the National Rifle Association Foundation (NRA). The NRA, in cooperation with Alex FFA, Alex Public Schools, the City of Alex, and community support is in the process of setting up a permanent sporting clays area to be supervised by the Alex FFA Chapter. The NRA funded over $4500 worth of easy bird throwers, sporting clays and shotgun shells. The NRA Foundation is the country’s leading charitable organization in support of shooting sports, awarding more than $125 million since its inception in 1990. The NRA Foundation supports those organizations and programs that ensure the continuation of our proud shooting and hunting heritage. The program has already produced success. Alex FFA sporting clays team competed at the district contest on 11-03-09. Devin Graham, Josh Barrington, Dakota Reid and Jake Pearson represented Alex and tied for fourth place competing against other schools from the southwest district of Oklahoma. Alex posted a team score of 43 while the winning team had 47. Devin busted 16 of his 20 clays placing him in a tie for fourth individual as well. The students are excited and looking forward to competeing again.
