Alex wins gold ball in Oklahoma Class B classic

State Champs
The underdog Alex Longhorns defeated the Laverne Tigers, 68-64, in the 2014 Class B state title game on Dec. 6, 2014, at Weatherford!

From the Chickasha Express-Star, story by Adam Troxtell, posted Saturday, December 6, 2014 10:47 pm:

It was perhaps the greatest night in the small-town history of Alex.

The Longhorns went toe-to-toe with the most dominant force in Class B, Laverne, on Saturday, and they ended up with the state title. It was a prize-fight, a 68-64 win to take the gold ball.

Neither team held anything back, throwing punch after proverbial punch to possess the trophy everyone desires. In the end, it is Alex’s first state championship in any sport ever in this, their first state final appearance since 1957.

Kyler Thornburg, especially, put in a performance worthy of erasing those decades of wait. The Alex running back went 478 yards on the ground and scored six of their 10 touchdowns. His longest opened the scoring, a 74-yard sprint as he took the ball from a direct snap and all the way to the house.

His second put Alex up by two scores, but the two-time defending state champion Laverne never blinked. Quarterback Tanner Allen led the way with 500 total yards of offense, 163 of it rushing and 337 through the air.

But it was Hunter Person’s pick six that changed the tone of the game early. Dalton Alcorn, who for Alex threw 8-for-13 for 186 yards and ran for 146 yards, perhaps didn’t see Person through the thick fog as the Tigers deep back took the interception 80 yards to give his team a two point lead.

From then on, they were locked head-to-head in an all-out scrap. Ihzan Castillo was Laverne’s answer to Thornburg, finishing with 9 catches for 306 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Allen found him twice – one for 39 yards and the other for 74 yards – in a third quarter that had six consecutive touchdowns scored by both teams.

Gold Ball

It was clear. A defensive stop was needed for the win. Alex got theirs at the perfect time.

Perhaps again looking for Castillo, Allen stepped back at midfield before attempting to tuck the ball and run. Brant Hines reached a hand out and knocked the ball away, and in the ensuing scrum Kyle Garcia had the ball for Alex with 1:14 to go.

Alcorn lined up one play before the Longhorns kneeled the ball twice in the most victorious of victory formations.

Thornburg State
Longhorn Football players, including #9 Koda Jackson and #11 Dalton Hefner, surround Junior Kyler Thornburg as he runs the ball against Laverne. Thornburg was named overall Most Valuable Player in the State Championship game for his 40 carries, 505 yards and 7 touchdowns!

Schlotter ends Senior season with injury as 'Horns go 5-0

It was big night in many ways for Senior Christian Schlotter, a defensive starter wearing number 45, who participated in Alex's Football Homecoming ceremonies and then served as a Senior captain of the Longhorn team as they took their home field against Bray on Oct. 3, 2014. Schlotter went on to return the Homecoming game's opening kickoff for a touchdown and then managed to snag an interception and a few tackles before being seriously injured just before half. He left the field on a stretcher while flashing the Longhorn victory sign.

The 'Horns went on to mercy-rule the Bray-Doyle Donkeys, 66-18, in the third quarter.Schlotter

Here we come...

Speedster Thornburg and Longhorn "Blackshirt" crew overrun Caddo, 64-20, in season opener

Coach Brand knew back in February 2014 that Longhorn Football would sport new black home field jerseys come game time in the Fall. He kept this secret to surprise the players and spectators and pump them up as the 'Horns opened the 2014 Oklahoma High School Football season against Caddo at home on September 5.

Looking dangerous and dashing in their new flat black uniforms with black numbers outlined in orange, Alex outmanned the Caddo Bruins from the first snap. During Alex's opening possession, speedster Running Back Kyler Thornburg, a Junior, turned on his afterburners and outran the Caddo defense in an old-fashioned foot race to score the first of many Longhorn touchdowns. Thornburg continued this trend, carrying 15 times for 415 yards and an amazing seven touchdowns! Senior Christian Slotter ran in one additional TD.

The 'Horns defense was also eye-catching as veteran starters Jacob Otey and Kyle Garcia, both Seniors, slashed and burned the Bruin offense with more than a little help from Sophomore Tyler Patton. Garcia snared a total of 9.5 tackles, Otey notched 8.5 and Patton racked up 5.5. Both Garcia and Otey earned sack credits as well.

Linebacker Brayden Tanner and Cornerback Christian Schlotter both intercepted the Caddo quarterback and returned the picks for scores.

With Alex on top 44-6 at half, Coach Brand did not go for the 45 point lead that would have put the game in the books. Instead, he took advantage of every minute of playing time to showcase the depth of his bench, allowing fans to have a look at the likes of Freshman Running Back Dalton James, Sophomore Preston Sullivan and Sophomore Wide Receiver Samuel Pearson, who played his first game of football ever for Alex High.
